Interested in sharing your story? Visit our Contact page to learn how Emily received a quilt through QD Quilts for Children with Diabetes. If your child is newly diagnosed with diabetes, visit the Quilting-Dee today. Dear Quilting Dee, You guys are wonderful! We received the quilt today, and it is absolutely beautiful. Emily is on "cloud nine!" She is now in bed asleep...with her quilt. Thanks for doing what you do to make these diabetic kids feel special. Sincerely, |
Real people Emily, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 8 Emily's mother wrote to Islets of Hope via the QD Quilts for Children with Diabetes program. Here is what she had to say about her extraordinary daughter (I also need to add that Emily's mother, Ronda, is also quite extraordinary):
Emily experienced the normal symptoms when she was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 6 1/2. We were all devastated, but Emily was a real trooper. She even gave herself her very first insulin injection! She has tried to make us feel better about her diagnosis by telling me, "It's o.k. mom," when I started giving her insulin injections. It seemed that she was more worried about us than herself! We continue to have difficulty regulating Emily's blood glucose, with the greatest difficulty occuring at night. Thankfuly Emily's family, friends, and diabetes team have been very supportive. She was even able to attend a week long diabetes children's camp this summer! We are praying for a cure, and are involved in raising money for research. As an elementary teacher in Emily's school, I was able to organize a "school walk" for JDRF in which we raised nearly $10,000. Emily knows the cure will come in her lifetime.
